Chess Workshops
for PRIMARY & SECONDARY SCHOOLS in collaboration with 
IM Mark Quinn - CHESS BUD IRELAND

AIMS:

  • To introduce students to the basic rules of Chess through a variety of activities and experiences.

  • To develop and encourage a love of Chess through practical workshops and participation.

  • Chess is a universal game, knowing no boundaries of age, gender, faith, ethnicity or disability, that promotes key intellectual skills such as problem solving, spacial awareness, logical thinking, pattern recognition and concentration. 

  • Chess teaches how to lose and how to win gracefully, to think ahead and foresee the consequences of actions.

  • The deep focus and presence of chess participation echo the principles of mindfulness, a state of being attuned to the present moment.

 

OBJECTIVES:  

  • To enable them to understand and enjoy the basics of playing Chess

  • Responsibility and independence as they take ownership of many aspects of the game.

  • Engage in a mindfulness approach and connect with all class colleagues through playing or inter-student tuition.

 

CONTENT:  

  • Understanding the rules of chess

  • Strategic thinking connected to each individual piece

  • Basic principles of opening, middlegame and endgame strategies

  • Simple tactics

  • Mating patterns

  • Chess etiquette

 

Throughout the workshop, instruction will be given by teacher and inter-student tuition will be encouraged.

 

CROSS-CURRICULAR LINKS: 

Chess is integrated with numerous subjects, such as Maths, Language, Art, Science.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS: €390 for full school day
+ travel and accommodation where necessary
SECONDARY SCHOOLS: €450 for full school day
+ travel and accommodation where necessary
